  1. Oxidative stress in CNS degenerative diseases and during Senescence: Free radical is a side-product of electron-transfer redox process that contains extremely reactive unpaired electron. It is suggested that free radicals regulate the cellular functions and/or neuroprotection or even cell death in biological systems. Indeed, the nigrostriatal system, which controls muscle tone and regulates the initiation of movement, was found deteriorated in Parkinson’s patients and the elderly. I focus on the neurodegeneration in CNS.
  2. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: Arsenic trioxide has been used for APL with some side effects, including peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, the effect of arsenic on the cell death in the dorsal root ganglia is under investigation
  3. Neuroprotective strategy: To prevent neurodegeneration, several strategies have been proposed and investigated, including carboxyfullerene (a nanoparticle), Green tea extract and melatonin. In addition, translational studies will be focused on target cancer therapies which may inhibit activated signaling transductions during neurodegeneration, such as hemorrhagic stroke. In our lab, non-clinical studies of target therapies or herbal extracts will be tested on the animal models.
